Andy Irvine Discography.

Andy Irvine has produced some of the best music this planet has to offer. Through Sweeney's Men, Planxty, Patrick Street, Mozaik and to the highs of his solo work. Andy remains an essential part of the music of Ireland today, as he has been for the past 36 years ! Here, is a look at just what he has produced to date.

I have bought all these albums over the years, in some cases buying them on cassette or LP records and later buying most of them again on CD. I didn't really realise just how many there were untill I put this together. Quite incredible !

Enjoy !

Kieron

Sweeney's Men.

Andy's first recording and also the first appearance of the Bouzouki in Irish music. Andy's debut on the bouzouki is on the wonderful 'Johnstone' track. Brilliant ! I actualled found Sweeney's Men a long time after Planxty, almost 12 years later. Very glad I did though! Released 1968.

NOTE; This complete album was also released on an double LP Irish Folk complilation, The Kilfenora Ceili Band being on the other half of the album. I do hate this type if thing, and don't own it!

There was also a release that combined both Sweeney's Men albums on one disc. The bonus was that it contained the track ' Old Woman in Cotton'. Worth it for that alone ! Andy only appears on the first album, and also sings the bonus track. Read More !

Sweeney's Men did release a second album WITHOUT Andy, called 'Tracks of Sweeney's Men'. Still a good album to have, although it is clearly a very different band without him.

The Legend Of Sweeney's Men, Anthology.

This is a mix of the two Sweeney's Men albums, and in an odd way, covers every connection to the members of the band. The Sleeve notes mention Old rough recordings of radio sessions and a reunion gig of the boys, Surely that it the stuff we would desperately love to hear! Surely alot more interesting than hearing versions of 'The Streets of Baltimore'.Very well packaged with some great old photos. Released 2004 Read More!

Planxty.

This is the album that started it all. Called quite simply the Black album and for many, the classic Planxty album. A must for any fan of Irish music and a changing point in the history of Irish music too. This IS the sound that set the world of Irish music on fire, and a sound that has often been copied but never equalled. I will never forget hearing 'Raggle Taggle Gypsy' with the interplay of mandolin and bouzouki, for the first time. A master piece as a debut album and an unforgetable piece of history. This is a fantastic album, with a fantastic cover. I really love this. Released 1973. Read More !

Planxty, The Well Below the Valley.

This album was released with two different covers. I really like the one on the left and honestly think the one on the right is the ugliest cover of all time. Whos' idea was this?? The one on the left is the cover that is more known, and this one is beautiful !A very powerful album, and one that is swamped in beautiful arrangements. Still a great album from Planxty. This is a brilliant album. Change to the line up of the band ( Donal being replaced with Johnny Moynihan ) but just as impressive! Planxty, After Break.

A very impressive come back album for the band The original album did not contain ' Bonny Light Horseman' and ' Lord Mc Donald/ Chattering Magpie' . These were added as Bonus tracks on a later release. Andy's ' You Rambling Boys of Pleasure' stands as my all time favourite song and that is a tough thing to say. Christy is in his element here too, ' Farmer Michael Hayes' is Christy at his best. Well, to be honest every part of this album is stunning, go buy it. Planxty at their best. Very interesting cover artwork. Originally released 1979. Read More...

Planxty, The Woman I Loved So Well.

This album is one of the least talked about Planxty albums but I really like this one alot. Some great songs from both Andy and Christy here, 'Little Musgrave' and 'Kellswate'r being two of them. Andy's touches to this album are beautiful. Even from the opening track, Andy's mandolin draws you into the centre of the emotion of this song and Christy powerful vocals do the rest. A great album. Andy Irvine. Rainy Sundays,Windy Dreams

First Solo release by Andy Irvine and a wonderful start to a very long a fruitful solo career. A difficult album to get hold of these days but well worth hunting down. I just don't understand how this album has not be labelled a 'Classic debut album' IT IS ! 'Emigrants' ' Longford Weaver' 'Rainy Sundays' and the fantastastically arranged ' Kingbore and the Sandman' . This is a masterpiece from a master musician. The original album that I bought did not have the Bonus Track, so I bought the CD to have the live version of 'Bonny Woodhall'. Get that extra track, it is an incredible version of the song that first appeared on the classic Andy Irvine and Paul Brady album...........this IS the essential version. Sadly..............almost impossible to find these days, Why ?? I just don't know. This is a VERY important album and one I will label here as "A CLASSIC DEBUT ALBUM". Also Released 1980. Another album that was released with two different covers. Not sure why, but the one on the right appeared alot later. Andy sounding particularly good in voice on this album. 'Thousands are Sailing' and 'Aragon Mills' being two of my Favorite tracks. Andy Irvine, Rain on the Roof.

This is a CLASSIC album. Andy Irvine at his best. The atmosphere and emotion created on this album is sheer genius. There are a few older tunes reworked, together with new songs and tunes. The reworked are the best versions ever recorded and the new, capture Andy at his best. It is quite incredible to see this released between two Patrick Street albums, and for it to sound so different. I love everything about this album, including the wonderful cover art work. Patrick Street, Compendium.

A best of Album, covering highlights of the past 15 years. To be very honest, it is a great collection but it really needs to be a double album to include many of the classic tracks that they have produced. People will buy this as a 'Best Of...' and will not hear tracks like 'Prince Among Men', ' Forgotten Hero', 'Springfield Road' or even 'Patrick Street' . How could it be a best of without them ! A great intro to a superb band and I only hope if they like what they hear they will buy the long recorded history of this band. I much prefer the earlier released ' The Best of Patrick Street' released in 1995, the 'compendium' was released 2000. Myabe this was meant as a Best of part 2.................. Read More !

Patrick Street, Street Life.

This album for some, is Patrick Street at their best. For me I found it a little disappointing. The highlight of this album is 'Green Grows The Laural', but Andy sings this solo with so much more passion and enegry. Gerry's singing, is not my cup of tea but hey, everyone else thinks this is Patrick Street at their best..............who am I to argue ! Released 2003. Read More !

The Gathering.

Here is a great old album that seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. I have never actually got hold of an original copy of this album but was given a copy by a friend. It is a lovely album and well worth buying if you can find one !

The credits as to who played what are erroneous in the sleeve notes. Andy sings ''There's sure to be a row'' with Paul Brady and ''The Mall of Lismore" with Triona Ni Dhomhnaill. He also plays Mandolin and Harmonica on Paul Brady's ''Heather on the Moor'' . This is worth the long hard hunt to find the album, as Andy's 'There's sure to be a Row' is wonderful ! The Gathering album recorded. 1977, but actually released in 1983

High Kings Of Tara.

Here is a great album that contains Solo tracks from Andy Irvine, Christy Moore and a few tracks from Planxty. Bonny Light horseman and Lord mc Donald/chattering magpie were added to a later CD issue of "After the Break". I have only labelled the tracks that Planxty or one of the members did, but the are other good bands on there too. ' General Monroe' and 'Bonny Light Horseman' are definate highlights on the album. This is a good addition to the collection. Released 1980.

Planxty: The Bonny Light Horseman
Andy Irvine: General Monroe
Planxty: First Slip,: Hardyiman the Fiddler A&B: The Yellow Wattle
Christy Moore/ Andy Irvine: John Of Dreams.
Christy Moore: The Sun Is Burning
Planxty: Lord Mc Donald: The Chattering Magpie

Peter Ratzenbeck, Outremer.

Andy is a guest on this album and plays two tracks. "I wish I was in Belfast town" ( known to us as "You Rambling Boys of Pleasure" ) and "My Hearts Tonight In Ireland" . Worth getting hold of for these two versions alone. Released 1994

Also important to mention two other albums by Peter that Andy appears on. He plays ''An Irish Dream'' ( would be interested to know what this song is? ) and ''Aragon Mill'' on 'Over the Years' Shamrock Records 1990 and ''Brackagh Hill'' on 'Travelogue' Shamrock Records 1997. ( I don't have these two albums as yet ! )

Paul Brady, The Liberty Tapes.

This is one of the best live albums I have heard. It was recorded by Paul privately on an old reel to reel, and it is bursting with atmosphere. Full of Great songs and Great music. I love this album and really played it a lot. A classic live recording. If you like Paul Brady and Andy Irvine you NEED this album in your collection. Great cover and insert too!

It is also very important to mention that, Andy also played on the wonderful PAUL BRADY album 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger' Mulligan, 1978 (plays Mandolin, Harmonica & Hurdy Gurdy on several tracks) A lovely album and Andy's adds some wonderful touches. I think it is one of those albums long out of print but for sure worth getting hold of, if you can find one !

Common Ground ( compilation )

This is a wonderful compilation album and worth mentioning here as there is a different recording of Andy's 'My Hearts Tonight in Ireland'. A very good version to, arranged here by Andy and Donal Lunny. The album has some Great music on it from Davy Spillane, Paul Brady, Donal Lunny, Christy Moore and even a very interesting track from Bono.

More EXTRAS.

If it doesn't have a comment then I don't own it as yet. If you have any info on the albums missing below, know of some I haven't added or can correct it, let me know. I will not add every compilation, unless it has a different recording or a Live version. I will be very interested in any Live recordings that I have missed.

"A Kiss in the Morning Early", "John Barleycorn" and a beautiful version of ‘Bonny Woodhall’. I think this version became the Bonus Track for the CD release of Rainy Sundays, Windy Dreams’’. But again really worth getting hold of, as Mick and Andy sound great together here.

They play five pieces together but Andy only sings ‘ The Longford Weaver’.

Folk Friends 2, 1981 (with Dick Gaughan, Dolores Keane & John Faulkner) Andy sings a Woody Gutherie song, ‘Seamen Three’ and a wonderful version of ‘Thousands Are Sailing.
