The term luxury yacht is a broad one that covers a wide range of boats. There is no standard for what constitutes a luxury boat. The most luxurious yachts are the largest ones, owned by the wealthiest people on the planet. A sixty-foot sailing yacht that is the top of the line will be considered luxurious by its owner if the boat contains all the features you can build into a yacht of this size.

After the First World War, wealthy individuals began to realize the benefits and prestige of owning a large private yacht. Savarona was a 1931 launch that the Turkish Government later purchased. The Christina O, which was originally a Canadian frigate and converted to a luxury motor yacht after the Second World War, became a world-famous luxury motor boat.

The first luxury sailing yachts that were built were the J-class sailing boats used to compete in the Americas Cup. The Shamrock, owned by tea magnate Thomas Lipton and one of only a handful ever built, was among the most famous. These yachts were owned by wealthy individuals who led a lavish lifestyle on and off the boat.

In the last 30 years, there has been an increase in large luxury boats owned by wealthy oil sheiks as well as new technology entrepreneurs such Bill Gates. A wealthy stockbroker would be as proud of an eighty-foot sailing yacht as Roman Abramovich of his 557-foot, $450 million mega yacht.

You will need a lot of money if you want to charter a luxury yacht. You pay as much as you can and get what you paid for. Chartering a yacht that is cheaper without all the luxury fittings will still be fun, but you won't get as much pampering.

Many luxury yachts can be rented out when not in use by the owner. Charter rates can vary greatly from an 80 foot boat with only two crew members to a 20 crew mega yacht. The daily rate of the yacht is not the end of your expenses. Fuel, drinks, food, and berthing costs are added to the daily rate. A crew tip of 15-20% is also included.

This industry is successful because it allows yacht owners to offset their costs and keep their yachts well-staffed and in good condition. Yacht charterers, on the other hand, charter their boats when they need them. It is cheaper than owning a yacht.
